about

What are the ULMS Young Professionals all about?

The Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle Young Professionals (ULMS-YPs) are a volunteer auxiliary group that targets young adults ages 21-40 to empower their communities and change lives through the Urban League Movement. As one component of the National Urban League, Young Professional chapters across the country support their local affiliates by collectively organizing events and activities to empower the affiliate’s mission and support the affiliate’s essential programming and services.

In addition to community engagement opportunities with the local affiliate, YP chapters strive to provide their members with personal and professional development opportunities to expand their networks, connect with other like-minded young professionals in the area, and build skills to help them succeed in their professional endeavors.

Young Professionals at a Glance

Overview

We define a ‘Young Professional’ as anyone between the ages of 21-40 who is committed to their career and personal development – no matter the chosen occupation.

We are all dedicated to our community; committed to seeking innovative solutions to persistent societal problems; and motivated to excel and prosper in our professional and personal endeavors.

In 2005, the Seattle Urban League’s Young Professionals (SULYP) group was first realized through the vision of three diligent young professionals — (1) Jeanette James, (2) Gina Moore Saunders, and (3) Angela Brooks — under the auspices of its local affiliate, the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle (ULMS).

Since then, the YPs have supported the local Seattle Urban League affiliate and emerging local leaders by providing opportunities for personal and professional development, community involvement, and leadership.

In 2023, nearly 18 years after its original establishment, the Seattle YPs decided to pivot and relaunch the chapter, abandoning its former structure and name in favor of one that aligned more closely with new goals, ideas, and areas of focus set forth by the Seattle Urban League. Now under its new name of the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle YPs (ULMS-YPs) — and empowered by a revised mission and renewed energy to serve — the chapter regularly hosts monthly activities and has grown to over 100 active members.

  • Why do I need to pay membership dues? A one-time annual dues payment is required of all active ULMS-YP members. This ensures that the chapter has funding support from its members to use for ULMS-YP activities, events, and programs.
  • What if I can’t pay my dues membership all at once? There will be periodic discounts on membership fees throughout the year to take advantage of to reduce the cost of membership. Be sure you are subscribed to our ULMS-YP email subscriber list to learn when these opportunities arise!

In the 1980’s and 1990’s, several Urban League affiliates recognized the need to prepare a new generation of young leaders to take the mantle of leadership of the civil rights movement. Young African American men and women in their 20’s and 30’s were invited to participate in and take an active leadership role in their local Affiliate Urban League programs and activities.

The National Urban League Young Professionals (NULYPs) was unveiled at the 1999 National Urban League Annual Conference in Houston, TX. Under the leadership of the group’s first president, Marcus Mitchell, the organization began to define itself and to carve out its role in the National Urban League movement.
