WASHINGTON, DC (May 19, 2023) – Today, National Urban League President and CEO Marc H. Morial released the following statement in remembrance of NFL Hall of Famer Jim Brown:
“Arguably one of the greatest athletes of the 20th century, Jim Brown was a brilliant football player whose talent and magnetism wooed fans all over the world. Although a football player by trade, Jim Brown was an actor and activist who devoted his life to advocating for the advancement of the African American community, including founding the Black Economic Union to assist Black-owned business owners, the Amer-I-Can Foundation to help curb gang violence in Southern California, and organizing the 1967 Cleveland Summit that brought together the nation’s top Black Athletes to support Muhammad Ali’s fight against serving in Vietnam.

“Jim Brown’s bold and impactful legacy will continue to inspire generations of fans for years to come. Our hearts and prayers are with his wife Monique, his children and community during this time.”
