Why We Gather
The Future We Build
For a quarter century, the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle’s Annual Breakfast has brought together business leaders, elected officials, philanthropists, community advocates, and supporters from across the Pacific Northwest to celebrate progress, strengthen partnerships, and invest in a more equitable future.
As one of our region’s premier gatherings for civic engagement and community impact, the Annual Breakfast serves as both a celebration of collective achievement and a call to action. Each year, nationally recognized voices join local leaders to inspire meaningful dialogue, challenge perspectives, and advance the conversations shaping our communities.
This year’s theme, Empowerment in Action, recognizes that thriving communities are built through advocacy, civic engagement, and collective action. Together, we’ll explore how each of us can help shape a stronger future for our region.
As communities navigate evolving economic and civic challenges, this event provides an opportunity to strengthen partnerships and explore the role each of us plays in expanding opportunity and advancing equity. Together, we’ll celebrate the progress we’ve made while inspiring the partnerships and ideas that will shape the future.

SPECIAL GUEST
About Kamala Harris
Kamala D. Harris served as the forty-ninth vice president of the United States from 2021 to 2025—the first woman in American history to hold the office. She began her career in the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office before being elected district attorney of San Francisco, where her Back on Track program became a national model for reducing recidivism.
As California’s attorney general, Harris prosecuted transnational gangs, big banks that defrauded homeowners, and for-profit colleges that targeted students and veterans. She defended the Affordable Care Act, fought for marriage equality, and pioneered the nation’s first open-data initiative in the criminal justice system. In the United States Senate, Harris fought for civil, immigrant, and voting rights, and gained national recognition for her incisive questioning in committee hearings.
As vice president, she led efforts to strengthen global alliances and address child poverty, gun violence, student debt, maternal health, economic opportunity, and reproductive rights—casting more tiebreaking votes than any vice president in history, including for pandemic relief and the largest climate investment ever. Throughout her career, she has always fought for the only client she has ever had: the people.

Why did ULMS invite Vice President Harris to the Annual Breakfast?
The 25th Annual Breakfast marks a quarter century of ULMS advancing economic empowerment, education, and civil rights in our region. For a milestone of this significance, we sought a speaker whose life and career reflect the impact of that work. With more than 20 years of public service across the state, local and federal government, Kamala has advanced equity, opportunity, and community empowerment in ways that closely align to ULMS.
Furthermore, As the first Black woman and first South Asian American to serve as a Vice President of the United States, she embodies the possibilities our mission exists to create. Her participation honors the agency approaching nearly 100 years of dedicated service to the community and celebrates 25 years of this community’s investment in ULMS.
Is this a political endorsement?
No. ULMS is a non-partisan 501(c)(3) organization. Hosting a speaker, including a current or former elected official, is not an endorsement of any candidate, party, or policy position. Urban League affiliates across the country have a long tradition of engaging leaders from across public life and this invitation continues that tradition.
Does inviting the former vice president mean that ULMS endorses her positions on israel and palestine, or any foreign policy issue?
No. ULMS does not take positions on foreign policy, and a speaking invitation is not an adoption of a speaker’s views on any issue. Our focus is, and remains, our mission here in Seattle and King County. The Vice President is joining us to celebrate. 25 years of that work.
People in our community are hurting over the conflict in the middle east. How do you respond to those who feel this invitation is insensitive?
We hear that pain and we do not dismiss it. Our community holds many perspectives on this conflict, and we respect the stances of those who have different views. This event is not a statement about that conflict. It is a celebration of 25 years of work on behalf of African Americans and underserved communities in our region, and we invited a speaker whose historic career speaks to that mission.
